Some thoughts about an inspiring plot
The beach serves as a profound and overarching theme in my painting, a space that encapsulates an idyllic vision of equality and connection among humanity. At the beach, distinctions such as clothing fade away, allowing individuals to exist without the societal labels that often define us. In this tranquil setting, people unite around the shared experience of being by the water, defined solely by their presence in this environment.
My paintings often employ the beach as a plot, a stage upon which various scenarios unfold. In the earlier years of my work, these scenes tended to depict sun-soaked summer moments, capturing the joyful essence of leisure and communal activity. However, as time has progressed, my interpretations of the beach have grown increasingly complex and enigmatic. The narratives I explore within these works can often become difficult to decipher, shifting from familiar representations to scenes that evoke the surreal nature of our realities. Some of these paintings bear a striking resemblance to theater productions, where the beach acts as both backdrop and protagonist in a play that weaves together human emotions, interactions, and the passage of time.
The beach occupies a unique position as a liminal space, a metaphysical site that exists at the intersection of land and sea. Its transient character emphasizes the fluidity of life itself, inviting contemplation of transformation and the cyclical nature of existence. One of my earliest works delves into the theme of bathers, subtly addressing the beach as a central motif, a precursor to my longstanding fascination with this setting. For nearly two decades now, I have returned to this subject time and again, consistently inspired by its multifaceted nature.
Despite this extensive exploration, I remain keenly aware that I have not yet fully exhausted the depth and richness of the beach as a theme in my art. The ever-changing dynamics of this space reflect the complexities of human life and community, and with each painting, I feel an invitation to delve deeper, to uncover new layers of meaning, and to uncover the stories that lie beneath the surface. Each canvas beckons me to engage with its mysteries, to explore new perspectives, and to find beauty in every transient moment spent at the shore. Ultimately, the beach continues to be a canvas for my imagination—a place where narratives of connection, transition, and introspection come alive, urging me to explore the depths of this eternal landscape.
